Only samurai of a certain rank were allowed to ride to the castle on horseback. They would travel with retainers, including a vanguard holding a fur-covered lance, and another attendant to shoulder baskets containing raingear. In the procession shown here, someone is being carried in a palanquin. Different types of palanquins were used according to one’s rank and the purpose of the outing.
